• For 2016-2017

Each SHS Band member should purchase/own a copy of the Rubank Advanced Method Volume I for their instrument. Books are available at local music merchants’ stores or through various internet sites. Please see Mrs. Trees immediately if you need help obtaining a copy!

All winds have 3 exercises out of the Rubank Advanced Method Book Vol. I, Percussion has additional exercises (from Rubank Beginner Mallet Book, will be supplied), that MUST be played for a grade EVERY quarter. Students are welcome to perform the examples more than once (the highest grade will be kept) at their discretion. The material will be covered in Rotations at the beginning of each quarter and it is the student’s responsibility to be sufficiently prepared. (A minimum of 4 scheduled rotations per quarter must be attended to satisfy grading rubric requirements.)

All material (except for Mallet Percussion) is from Advanced Method Units 12 through 20. It is recommended the students review the entire lesson, and work on the material throughout the quarter. Material is chosen as to strengthen the students’ skills, the benefit being obtained only if consistently practiced. Grading will be based purely on number of errors. Extra help will be made available and is recommended.

Please note: For Duets in Qtr. 4, both parts should be mastered and it is expected that 2 students (students’ choice of partner on like instrument) will play the duet together. It is recommended that the duet be practiced together outside of school.

Double Tonguing should be utilized whenever possible. Clarinets, be sure to alternate pinkies!
