Public Comments for Policy 7317 - Use of Electronic Devices
The budget bill signed into law by Governor Hochul on May 9th adds a new statute, Education Law Section § 2803, requires all school districts and BOCES to adopt a policy by August 1, 2025 regulating certain smart device use during the school day.
The new law generally prohibits the use of internet-enabled devices, including smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, or other devices that connect to the internet, during the school day. The school day is defined as “the entirety of every instructional day...during all instructional time and non-instructional time, including but not limited to homeroom periods, lunch, recess, study halls and passing time.” N.Y. Educ. Law § 2803.
The Saugerties Central School District Policy Committee has been working on developing a meaningful policy for the past several months.
Please review the policy linked here, and provide all feedback by June 27, 2025. The Policy Committee will consider the feedback during the July 1 Policy Meeting.
