Civic Engagement/Student Voter Registration
Recognizing the importance of voting and civic engagement Saugerties Central School District supports and encourages student voter registration and pre-registration during the school year. Under New York Election Law, a 16 or 17 year-old who pre-registers to vote will automatically be registered to vote upon reaching 18. Students 18 years and over who are qualified, can register to vote.
To be eligible to vote in New York State you must:
A person shall be entitled to vote in New York State and in all matters placed upon the official ballot if such person is:
- be a U.S. citizen;
- be 18 years old by December 31 of the year in which you file this form (note: you must be 18 years old by the date of the general, primary or other election in which you want to vote);
- live at your present address at least 30 days before an election;
- not be in prison for a felony conviction and;
- not claim the right to vote elsewhere.
- *NEW* pre-registration can begin at the age of 16: Voter registration is now open to 16 and 17 year-olds. Students must provide either the last 4 digits of their social security number or DL number on application. Registered 16-17 year-olds will be placed in “inactive status” and it will be automatically updated to “active” voter status on their 18th birthday.
