As the first from Saugerties to receive this honor, Thornton, a 2004 graduate, excelled in discus and shot put during high school, securing local and state championships. Her collegiate career at the University of Rhode Island included four consecutive discus championships. Post-collegiate, Sarah made a mark in coaching and as a competitor, qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Trials and continuing to excel at national events.
The school now proudly displays a plaque commemorating her achievements.
The Section IX Hall of Fame was set up about 6 years ago and was spear headed by mostly Orange County coaches. Each year they nominate several athletes, a coach and sometimes an official.
Thornton's journey from a standout high school athlete to a decorated coach and elite competitor is not only a source of pride for Saugerties High School but also a shining example of perseverance and dedication. The plaque hanging in the school now serves as a tangible reminder of her legacy and an inspiration for aspiring athletes throughout Saugerties.
