Junior-Senior High School Lead Testing Results
On September 6, 2016, Governor Cuomo signed legislation, and the Department of Health adopted emergency regulations, titled Lead Testing in School Drinking Water. As a result, any water outlet that is currently or may potentially be used for cooking or drinking is required to be tested for the presence of lead.
In compliance with these regulations, Saugerties Central School District sampled 250 water outlets in our Junior/Senior High School on October 12th and 13th. There were 10 other locations in the school tested earlier this year. Of the 260 samples taken, 34 exceeded the 15 micrograms per liter (mcg/L) or parts per billion (ppb). They are:
Science Rooms – 204 (instructor’s sink), 403 (lab sink), 407 (prep room sink), 415 (lab sink), 500 (3 lab sinks), 508 (6 lab sinks), 509 (7 lab sinks), and 511 (instructor’s lab sink)
Technology Room – 413 (slop/trough sink – 3 faucets)
Home and Careers Rooms – 614 (3 kitchen faucets), 616 (1 kitchen faucet)
Faculty Restrooms – Ladies’ (near cafeteria), Men’s (near 601c), Ladies’ (near 601c – 2 faucets)
Kitchen – 2 steamer spray lines
These 34 locations will be taken out of service unless they are used for hand washing and cleaning (i.e. restrooms). If they are used for hand washing or cleaning, clear signing will be posted indicating the water should not be used for drinking. The faucets, fixtures, and plumbing of water outlets identified as exceeding Department of Health standards will be replaced within the next twenty days; and the water will be retested for acceptable levels following the remediation.
An adequate supply of potable water for drinking and cooking is available to all building occupants of the Saugerties Junior/Senior High School through any of the other 226 water outlets sampled and verified to be in compliance with Department of Health regulations. Keep in mind that every water fountain and water-bottle refill station has been deemed to be safe for consumption according to these standards.
The full results of all lead testing performed, and remediation plans are available on the Saugerties Central School District website. Please be assured that the school administrators and the Board of Education take seriously our responsibilities for the health, safety, and wellbeing of the children, staff members, and community members who utilize our facilities.
